After the demolitions of the walls of the Fort of Bombay in the 1860s, the location of its famed Church Gate became a very important public square, and an iconic crossroad. Two important monuments on the square give it the names it has been known by - the Flora Fountain and the Hutatma Smarak. Both have significant connections with events in the city's history.
