Today, it seems like the Colaba Causeway was intended for three things: shopping, shopping and more shopping. But this strip of land was originally sea. Where Colaba Police Station is today, the island of Bombay ended, and to cross over to the southernmost islands of Old Woman’s Island and Colaba where the military cantonment was, you had to take a boat. The crossing was unsafe especially during the monsoons and many ferries would capsize, leading to the loss of many lives. The Colaba Causeway was built in 1838 to connect the islands. Later, land was further reclaimed on both sides of the causeway, giving rise to genteel residences, housing colonies, bazaars and, of course, the shopping district. Our new walk #CausewayCanter explores the precinct around the road bridge, once the transit point for soldiers and sailors travelling to their rest houses on the “south islands.”
